Funeral services for JR Tivis, 78, of Portales, will be at 2:00 PM, Thursday, November 3, 2016, at Trinity Assembly of God Church with Pastor Kelly Fulfer officiating, assisted by Tim Tivis and Mark Christian. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Jordan Tivis, Brandon Tivis, Joe Chrisitian, Mike Klika, D. K. Shafer, Boyd Miller, Ron Jackson and Jerry Tivis serving as pallbearers. All of his many friends will be honorary pallbearers.
JR Tivis was born January 23, 1938, in Portales, to the home of Susie (Emerson)and Fate Tivis, and died October 31, 2016 in Lubbock, TX as the result of an auto accident. JR lived his life in Portales except for a few years when he was very small. He attended school in Floyd and later in Portales. On September 14, 1957, he was married to Nancy Sanderson.
He began his working career driving a gas truck for Roy Smith. In 1958, he went to work for Perry Electric, and later worked for Arthur King. In the mid 1960's he took his Electrical Contracting tests and established his own business. JR continued working right up until the time of his death. JR enjoyed breeding and racing horses, and in the early 1990's he won the Shoofly Futurity with one of his horses. He enjoyed singing, and playing his guitar. JR was a daily regular at the local McDonald's where he drank coffee with countless friends, and visited with dozens more as they passed by.
He is survived by Nancy, his wife of more than 59 years of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Jodi Tivis of Lubbock, TX; two grandsons, Brandon Tivis and wife, Allyssa and Jordan Tivis; his mother, Susie Tivis of Portales; a brother, Jerry (Cherry) Tivis of Portales; and four sisters,Virginia Stewart of Portales, Mary Helen (Webb) Corbin of Lubbock, Lovon (Johnny) Chase of Clovis and Laveda (Boyd) Miller of Portales.
He was preceded in death by his father, and two brothers, Billy Ray Tivis who died December 5, 2004, and Donny Tivis who died February 19, 2015.
